Light Fixture Combos We Love (+ the vendors who can help you get the glow!)

Last week, we interviewed lighting expert Nathanael Washam who shared valuable advice on one of the most important elements in your home—the lighting.  Check out his, ahem, enlightening advice here

This week, we are sharing some light fixture combos we love and how YOU can get the look! Prime your Pinterest boards for this light-filled inspiration session!

Where to start when choosing a light fixture

When we are sourcing decorative light fixtures for our client projects, we consider several factors:

Style

We look at the home’s architecture and age and evaluate how the light fixtures we choose will blend with the style of the home. In many cases, we want the fixtures to reflect the home’s character and flow with the architecture and its surroundings. For example, a shell and rope chandelier might look out of place in an urban, modern condo but absolutely perfect at a seaside cottage.

Interior Finishes

Evaluating the interior finishes that exist and are staying in the home, plus the new finishes we develop as part of the renovation, is an important factor in choosing decorative light fixtures. We like to have the physical finish samples (carpet, wood floor, stone counter, tile backsplash, etc.) sitting on the desk in front of us as we are searching online for fixtures. This helps us to visualize how the finishes and fixtures will work together.

Metal Finish

We look at other fixed finishes in the house, such as door hardware (knobs and hinges), plumbing fixtures, and cabinet pulls to influence our light fixture metal choices. In many cases, we choose to mix metals to add visual interest.

Scale

Understanding the scale or size of your fixtures in relation to the room size and the things around the light fixture is really important! There are rules of thumb that you can follow to get your fixture size right the first time. When it comes to ceiling fixtures, Lightology has a handy chandelier size calculator and a ceiling-mounted fixture calculator to help you select the appropriate size ceiling fixtures and installation height for your room.
